So the first sightseeing day in Amsterdam has come and gone.  I learned one

Rijksmuseum

major thing today about this city… be sure to look both ways before crossing the streets. Bikes and scooters don’t abide by any rules!  They are crazy and all over the sidewalks and their own lanes!

In our adventures today, after getting up at 5:30 am, this jet lag thing isn’t as much fun as it sounds, we ventured out and purchased a city pass (IAmsterdam pass) to see as many things as possible over the next 48 hrs.  Unfortunately there are very few pictures from the museums as none of them so far will let you take your cameras inside.

Inside the Heineken Experience

So we went and saw the Van Gogh museum and learned his very interesting life, the Rijksmuseum briefly to see some more art… and then it was off to the highlight… the Heineken Experience.   This wonderful picture was taken inside the old brewery.  I do have to admit though that this is one place that you will want to go.  We learned a lot about the history of Heineken, met some great people and had about 1.5 hrs of entertainment. We also got made into a bottle of Heineken.  Can`t go wrong there.

Bike Parking

Bike Parking near central station

We then went on a Canal cruise, and I took far to many pictures, but one that stood out, is a multiple story bike parking lot.  Everyone here bikes… there are so many more bikes than cars it`s crazy!

Well that`s all for today… tomorrow there will be more!

June 28 – Welcome to Amsterdam

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Welcome everyone to the first official travel post!

So after travelling for 10 hours and getting into Amsterdam with only 1 hour of sleep I’d arrived.  Had everything planned out to hop on a train and get to my hotel in the heart of Amsterdam in time to watc the Netherlands World Cup Game.

So I go and purchase a ticket, get on a train and 15 minutes in (the train ride is supposed to only be 10 minutes) I’m getting a bad feeling.  It seems that I got on a train in the wrong direction (in the end about 40 minutes out of the city as the distance between stops is very long)… Yes I’m blonde!  So with a bit of help from the train attendant, the fellow passengers around me, a new ticket, a long ride out into the middle of the countryside and a bit of embarrassment… I finally made it into Amsterdam.  The good news… I saw my first windmills!

The only problem is that being that late I only caught the last 15 minutes of the Netherlands game…  It’s lucky that was the most exciting part of the game.  I will be purchasing a Netherlands jersey for the game on Saturday so I truly fit in! Yaaaa, bright orange!

Today it’s off to the first day of sightseeing… just have to wait until the city gets up (we were wide awake at 5:30 this morning which as many of you know is not normal for me :))

The next post will have pictures… I promise!

Cheers,

Travis
